Every time it tries to be slightly leftfield it makes me cringe. The cinematography is too polished, the soundtrack is too current as are all the pop culture references, so this film already feels dated. To it's credit the film did have a good cast, especially a homo Woody Harrelson, and the dad suffering from Alzheimers.
The film did get slightly better as it went along, and there were one or two chuckles. Too long, too predictable, too cliche, too hip and even the sex scenes weren't that good because they kept chatting through them like a running commentary. With Friends with Benefits, as with Easy A, he has shown the ability to bring freshness to a stale foundation and to coax strong performances from his actors.
There's not enough here to capture the interest of those indifferent to romantic comedies, but fans - even of the casual variety - will find this to be a pleasant mid-summer diversion. Between all the explosions and superhero action, it's nice to take a break and watch two people predictably fall in love. One of the very few films in my collection I'd call a guilty pleasure. The characters fit within a strange paradox where they're written as insanely down to earth with a cynical observation for literally everything, yet these people clearly do not really exist. They especially try and fit a lot of different ideals inside Timberlake's Dylan.
He somehow vaults from directing a decently-successful internet blog to becoming the art director of GQ Magazine, and his persona is pretty close to the typical non-threatening movie nerd, but then he takes off his clothes. Even though the characters' trip to Los Angeles marks the start of the 'cliched' part of the film, I'm fairly OK about it as it's from that point they start to seem a bit more like actual people. The first movie was No String Attached, where Kutcher played Natalie Portman's, shall we say, intimate friend. The second film was Friends with Benefits, which found Kunis palling around with Justin Timberlake in some not-very-PG-appropriate ways. His performance as "emotionally unavailable" ass man opposite "emotionally damaged" wiseass Mila Kunis gamely lets her steal the show. Kunis plays Jamie, a headhunter who recruits Dylan for a fancy job at GQ (a magazine for which Timberlake is the ur–cover model these days). She's crass, sassy, and so quick she never leaves time for the audience to stop and think too much. She teeters over a luggage conveyor belt in bare feet, straddles Timberlake like she's riding a mechanical bull, and tosses off dick jokes with utter ease.

There are welcome cameos from Andy Samberg, Emma Stone, and Jason Segel (who was Kunis' love interest in Forgetting Sarah Marshall).
